Pablo Picasso

Woman with a Book, 1932, oil on canvas, 130.5 x 97.8 cm

The model for this brightly colored painting was Picasso’s mistress, Marie-Therèse Walter, who in this picture looks up from her book and momentarily daydreams. Picasso based his portrait on one of the extraordinary portraits by Dominique Ingres - Madame Moitessier. Striking similarities can be noted in the pose, graceful lines and in the reflected image in the mirror behind the armchair.
